Pens:

As good fortune would have it, some of the most popular beaches on the East Coast (USA) are but a two-hour ride south. The Delaware beaches are sought as respite for those that live up and down the Mid-Atlantic and much much farther.

I grew up at these beaches–summering there, and my children and grandchildren have benefited from these natural treasures. What can be more nourishing for the soul than casting an eye on the sand and surf, listening to the seabirds, watching pods of porpoises, a pair of whales, or just smelling the salt air?

That place where the ocean meets our day is one of the most exhilarating and tranquilizing. It can erase anxiety and the world’s ills for just minutes or hours. It gives and we receive.

Last week my family and I were there to celebrate. Festivities were spread throughout three days of merriment. The event brought some from the far reaches of our country. Together in that serene environment perfect weather of summer’s end meshed with extroverts and introverts cheering each other in conversation.

The sunrises and sunsets were spectacular. At this time of year the earth’s axis moves to give us changing patterns of light and temps. It’s magical and mesmerizing, especially at the seashore where vistas are readily available. Miles of sand and surf for one’s emotional and physical pleasure. Walking the wreck line is my idea of serenity.

In the Lens section are some images from the weekend: one converted in black and white and the other created with Hipstamatic. Each seemed to give a timeless record. Each shows the grandeur of nature in relationship to humanity’s desire to bathe in sand, surf and sun. Each could have been taken during my youth, my children’s or grandchildren’s.

This particular beach is known for its large swath of sand–luxurious room to savor the ocean’s lure. While the Delaware beaches have year-round devotees, summer is high season for romping with family and friends.

Since the summer was within days of its farewell, the beach had a single line that marked a spot for the day’s enjoyment. Humans were barely visible among the beach’s bounty.

Summer’s end brings a chance to see what is so miraculous about nature’s gift to us: that place that offers new memories that co-mingle with how life with nature was and still can be. Summer’s end offers a chance to understand the power of Mother Nature to nourish and nurture our souls.

Tip of the Week: This past week Allan at Ohm Sweet Ohm gave his readers the news that a new, new version of Hipstamatic (300) was about to be launched (click here to read Allan’s post). Since I am a fan of the app’s capabilities and abundant combinations, I awaited its availability with enthusiasm. In recent posts I have written about Hipstamatic’s place in my photographic tool kit. Now it promised to offer more choices (e.g., three camera modes) for its frequent and  occasional users as well as newcomers. On the day of its launch it automatically updated on my iPhone. Immediately, I began to play with it, and can hardly stay away. The new permutations include so much more than its older version that it astounds. The best place to learn about the app is Hipstamatic’s website, which you can view here. Also I encourage you to try it, because it’s temporarily free at the iTunes store (click here; the new version is 300 and a day later they corrected issues with release of 301). Yes, I rave about the new version, because it offers many changes that really surprised me, and are beyond what I could have imagined. Let me know if you try it for the first time, or your reaction as a seasoned or non-seasoned user.

  1. BunKaryudo says:

I know zero about photography so treat my opinions with caution, but I also prefer the second photograph and for the same reason as Nadine earlier in your comment thread. It has a vintage feel to it which is quite appealing. This doesn’t mean that there’s anything wrong with the first photograph, though, so I hope I haven’t hurt its feelings.

  3. I love how your photos tell a story, begin a story. It is so enjoyable to see someone so immersed on their craft-art.

  4. Lovely photos, Sally and another beautiful post that was filled with reminders that we both enjoy so many of the same things. I took several beach photos last week that are very similar to your silhouettes but from later in the day, close to sunset. Walking along the wreck line is indeed my idea of serenity too. Of your two choices this week I favor the second and have also had fun exploring the new Hipstamatic 300. Overall I’m enjoying the changes but have had a few problems, including a full crash yesterday, that will take time to work through. Hopefully the next update will fix many bugs and I’m looking forward to exploring each new feature.

    • Lisa, there is so much new with Hipstamatic that I feel it will take a bit of time to explore. Hope that your problems were solved. It’s so lovely that we are such devotees to Mother Nature. It’s always a wonderment that I have met people like you through this blogging life. Thanks for your comment.

  5. restlessjo says:

Love the sky in that first shot, Sally! 🙂 So much story telling in that photo!
I will have to get to grips with Instamatic. Maybe I’ll have a look at your link.

  6. Gallivanta says:

I agree about the timelessness of these photos. I particularly like number 2 because it makes me feel the nostalgia of the last summer’s day at the beach.

  7. I like the second photo, Sally. It has a vintage feel. And as a Water sign, any scene with that element always appeals to me.

    Enjoy your weekend!

  8. Jill's Scene says:

Great challenge, Sally and I’ve enjoyed checking out the interpretations. For your post, my preference is the first photo, I like the drama of the light behind the clouds —threatening rain, perhaps.

  9. Nato says:

I am drawn more to the first. I think it is more vivid. I like the other too. It is just a different feel though, more nostalgic and peaceful. I agree, the beach is a glorious place that always restores me. Downloading the Hipstamatic app now…

  10. Both versions of the beach are excellent. Still, my favourite is the first one. Most importantly is that more activity at the beach front and at the horizon makes it more lively. Also the clouds have a more dynamic curved upward energy that is lacking in the Hipstamatic version. Finally I also love the deep tones that the black and white creates.

  11. Has anyone else found that their Phoneography Challenge widget has disappeared, saying the ImageShack Image has expired? If I click on it, it will still take me here, but there’s no photo there any longer. I’d like to have something there that works and looks good. Sally, do we have a new widget to connect to the challenge?

    • Janet, I’ve been remiss to create a new one. I guess that I am on the fence as to its need. It took some effort to do the original. What is your opinion about its validity? I do appreciate that you CARE.

      • I don’t know if anyone ever clicks on the icon or not, but it does link directly to your page. But I always include a link to the current challenge in my post, so people are able to get there if they want to do so. I have a couple other “badges” up for things I participate in, but again, I don’t know if anyone ever uses them. They are good publicity, however.

I realize that leaves me sitting squarely on the fence (ouch!) I don’t know how much of a hassle it is to create one, so I can’t advise on that. I guess I do think it’s worthwhile because it allows people visiting the blogs of participants to see your challenge. I do look at the ones on blogs I visit, but I have no idea whether I’m in the majority or not.

Don’t know if that helps, but it’s my two cents worth. 🙂

      • Janet, I am going to re-visit the idea and ruminate on it for a bit. I do appreciate your thoughts about it. Thanks.

  12. LavendarLadi says:

I love the sharpness of the first photo but I also love the second photo because it makes my feel the memory of summer.

  13. Debbie H says:

I like the first one too for some reason, it appeals to me! I like that the clouds and sky are made dramatic with the black and white, but having said that the second one is good too.

  14. Both are nice photos, Sally! Here I am living in Florida and didn’t get to the beach once this year. sigh…. Here’s my contribution for this challenge: https://livingwithmyancestors.wordpress.com/2015/09/29/sally-ds-mobile-photography-challenge-challengers-choice-architecture-2/

  15. Su Leslie says:

I like both images, but probably prefer the slightly more stark quality of No.1. It finally feels like Spring here, and I’m so looking forward to getting to the beach soon. Cheers, Su.

  16. The first photo speaks to me.The black and white creates an images of drama and longing, as if we are leaving the beach and looking back over our shoulder once last time
I got a notice of the new Hipstamatic and downloaded it right away thanks to Allan. Really great fun.I go back and do native camera pics into hipsta WOW!

  17. Maria F. says:

Sally, I’m amazed at how mobile photography IS taking over. I like the first one better, but the 2nd has a vintage look to it.

  18. Allan G. Smorra says:

    Hi Sally,
I like the toned effect on the second photo, it looks very mysterious. The first one is my favorite—the silhouettes disappearing into the distance really appeal to me.
    Ω

    • Allan, good morning. Wish that I could send you some of the rain that is forecast for the Mid Atlantic this week. Cannot complain about our drought status compared to the West Coast. Wish Mother Nature would give you a long sustained slow rain. Thanks for your comment. Happy Hipstamatic…

      • Allan G. Smorra says:

Thanks for your kind wishes on our behalf, Sally. Our forecast is for a 10% chance of rain tomorrow, so things are looking up. NorCal is hoping for some rain this year and hopefully not all at once.
I think about what Johnny Carson once said about California, “There are four seasons: Mud, Flood, Fire and Earthquake.”
        Now, back to some Hipsta-tutorials…
        Ω

      • Allan, the new version is overflowing with such possibilities. See you soon. I know that El Nino is in the forecast, which that will bring lots of precipitation to the south of you. I can only hope that Northern California gets its share. Thanks.

  19. I like the softer antique tones of the second but both great!

  20. Suzanne says:

The top photo really has a hot day feel while the second one is so moody it really captures that feeling of being at the beach on a sultry day. I love your line -That place where the ocean meets our day is one of the most exhilarating and tranquilizing.
Here’s the link to my post for the challenge http://artifactsandfictions.com/2015/09/28/in-the-forests-of-the-mind/

  21. Amy says:

Hi Sally, I like the first one. The clouds are dramatic. Beautiful silhouettes. 🙂

  22. Sally, I actually like both photos. They are strong and timeless images.
The first one has strong features. The composition is wonderful. The clouds angle, the lighter sky at the left side and dark on the other side, the high contrast and the silhouettes. It is for me the family weekend image.
The second one brought me closer to your childhood.

  23. Angeline M says:

I love your first photo the best, Sally. The stark contrast of the white clouds and the silhouettes against dark is wonderful. My Hipstamatic updated automatically….now I just need to learn how to use it. Allan encouraged me awhile back to go to their website, and now I have no more excuses 🙂

  24. dsaquarelles says:

I prefer 1, because its sky is magnificent!

  25. Indira says:

Hi Sally! I loved the first one. though both are beautiful. Contrast in first one defines the clouds and silhouettes beautifully.

  26. elisa ruland says:

I really like the first shot, Sally. It captures that end of the day felt after a long dreamy day at the beach. The point when you know it’s time to pack up your stuff, but you really don’t want to. Just a few more minutes…

  27. Carespin says:

Hello! I’ve been using hipstamatic for some time mostly just for fun because I like how you can shake your phone and get a random combination of settings. I do love the very much so updated new version of hipstamatic! I would recommend people try and definitely check out the site to familiarize yourself with the settings, then it’ll be pretty easy to use.

  28. I like the first one as well, Sally. The clouds and contrast draw me to it inexorably. Your trip to the beach sounds wonderful and I enjoyed the virtual bread with you and your family. Thanks! 🙂

    janet

  29. pattimoed says:

Hi Sally. Happy Monday! I am a big fan of the first b & w shot. It really shows the wonderful interplay of light and shadow in the clouds. But I love the silhouettes in both shots!

  30. lulu says:

I like the drama of the first photo. I have Hipstamatic but haven’t experimented with it. Perhaps today I will make that a challenge for myself.
