iPhoneography Challenge: Architecture

architecture and Architecture significantly influence my interpretation of my visual world. In two of my posts (click here and here), I discussed this concept of the small “a” and capital “A” architecture. Regardless, I seem to redefine much of my “seeing” universe as architectural in nature.

More words than we realize become relegated to the archives. Or they are made to fit into the ever-changing culture. Or they are captured by a trend or new theory. Some  return in new garb.

Architecture is part of this linguistic re-use. Think: “the overall design or structure of a computer system” (from the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language).

I am drawn to another and lesser meaning of architecture. It explains my view on the word’s depth and richness: an “orderly arrangement of parts; structure.” (from the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language).

So I was not surprised to find myself setting up a photo shoot to capture a new purchase: the original slinky. I’ve photographed the newer models, which are made of colored  plastic. But I was yearning for the slinky of my childhood, which was lightly-polished grey metal with architectural flare that is determined by its user.

Each time the slinky is set in motion, it mimics various angles, curves, lines and shapes. The light diffuses in ways that are new each release of this innovative toy. Every toss gives birth to a new “arrangement and structure.”

Since 1945 children, teenagers and adults have been staring at the wondrous permutations of this “walking spring.” So I was delighted to find the local five and dime store (Yes, we still have one.) display this gem among the sundry of current crazes.

In the Lens section are three images of the metal slinky, which is bursting with architectural features. Each image shows the interplay between two of these artifacts of my youth. Each one reminds me that architecture and Architecture effect the aesthetics, comforts, conveniences, designs, and qualities that are found in everyday living. Each also stirs my appreciation for those who bring the small “a” and capital “A” into my visual field.
