Light and shadows of autumn always capture my heart and soul. The sun slowly shifts its position (or so we think) and the earth laughs at our reaction.

Each season has its symbolism and truth for lessons of life. Each depends upon our planet’s spinning on its axis. In truth, I feel particularly blessed to live where four seasons exist.

This autumn has been a quiet entry into the alteration of the landscape. Its November, and last night the first “real” frostline cast its spell.

Leaves remain on the trees, some flowers are still being produced (my rosemary is covered in sweet lavender-colored blossoms), no juncos (small birds that winter here and should have arrived) in sight, and some butterflies and insects linger.

Sunsets have been sensational. Most afternoons the sun is so powerful in its day’s finale that I cannot even pause to shoot its splendor. It’s just too bright. So I head for the woods where the light and shadow join forces to create marvelous abstractions.

For me light is the element of photography that tests my sensibilities and visual acuity. It fosters my way of seeing: what is there, what I perceive is there, what is not there.

Light provides those evergreen possibilities of change and sudden awareness of the blatant vs. grand vs. subtle vs. shy. When the contrast is just right, I am stilled and awe-struck.

In the Lens section are three images taken in the last two weeks. All were shot in the late afternoon with its cunning ways of drawing me into its expected and unexpected performances.

The first two images were taken in a state park that shirts my city. I have so many choices of preserved open space that I make the rounds, being familiar with the landscape in each  of our many parklands (small and large). As I entered the trail, the sun led me into its perfection.

The last image was taken a few days ago. I found an entrance to a local orchard’s additional spread. Rows of apple and peach trees were warming themselves in the blazing afternoon rays. Leaves were afire, and the trees were covered in greens, oranges and yellow hues: not a red in sight.

Tip of the Day: Here is a brief introduction to a marvelous source about nature. iNaturalist (click here) is a Website “where you can record what you see in nature, meet other nature lovers, and learn about the natural world.” The organization assists you in identification of species and also partners with other organizations—both national and international–to provide a deeper understanding about our natural world. Need to identify a bird, insect, flower—this is your site to peruse. Want to help survey a species, this is your place. Want to know the plight of flora or fauna, this is your resource. Want to be more informed about nature, bookmark iNaturalist and get to know its various offerings. Click here and you can download the free app from the iTunes store (for those who do not have an iPhone, use their Website). Hope that you find it informative.

My contribution taken where out walking with my dog today. Thanks for an ‘awesome’ challenge. The leaves are incredible. So beautiful. Makes you want to stomp and them and hear the crunch.

  4. munchow says:

I love the play of shadows and light in the two first photos – while the last one is all about colours and shapes. Enjoy the rest of the week, Sally!

  5. HansHB says:

    Lovely autumn-colors!

  6. Hi Sally, this is the first time I’ve come across your phoneography challenge. I love your last photo of the trail above; it looks like the trees are dripping with color; the leaves looks almost like chandeliers! It was fun to do this, because I just happened to go for a walk with my iPhone and then came across your challenge later; I thought it was perfect. Thanks for coming up on my radar!

Here’s mine for your challenge: http://catbirdinamerica.wordpress.com/2013/11/07/phoneography-challenge-the-phone-as-your-lens-nature-autumns-light-and-shadows/

  7. As I make my way through other photo challenges, I invite anyone who talks about or tags their photos as iPhoneography to participate in your challenge, Sally. Hopefully we’ll get some more new people for this excellent challenge.

  8. The color photo of the trail is my favorite — it draws me in and makes me feel a part of nature. The same in black and white reminds of a scary movie! Ok, so I’ve been watching too much TV! And the gold leaves makes me miss the seasons — but not enough to move back to the cold! 🙂

  9. thirdeyemom says:

Beautiful! I especially love how the light reflects in the third photo. I also love the different kind of light we find in fall.

  10. Cassie says:

It is a toss up between the first and second photo. I am leaning towards the first one because of the green foliage. It has been a little stormy here, so even though I usually prefer B&W I am needing a splash of color. I like the shadows mostly in the foreground and the light in the background.
Here is this weeks share-able from me..http://cassiebeers.wordpress.com/2013/11/05/iphoneography-challenge-nature/

  11. Steve Lakey says:

Hi, I particularly love the black and white photo, with its contrasts and mystery. I’ve already got lost in there!

This is my first iPhoneography Challenge. Here is my contribution:

iPhoneography Challenge: Nature – Winter Wonderland

  12. I like the last one most of all. The repetition of the tree trunks receding is very effective in drawing the eye through the shot.

  13. wisejourney says:

    no 3…a little eerie!

  14. Allan G. Smorra says:

I like the warmth of the colors in your last photo.

Here is my entry this week: http://wp.me/p24idL-1Jq

  15. dsaquarelles says:

The 1 : is poetic, the 2 : is dramatic, the 3 is warm, they are wonderful. I prefer the 3 with its warm colours.

  16. Sally — It’s “two thumbs way up” for frame-3 of your set. Those gold, oranges and greens, coupled with the low angle of shoot, really drew me in to the orchard. Nicely done. Here are some of my Phantastic Phoneographic Phauna snaps: http://thepalladiantraveler.com/2013/11/05/phoneography-challenge-nature-3/

  17. Soothing images of Nature. Green color refreshes the mind and calms the heart. Have a great week ahead.

  18. Luanne says:

    These are beautiful.

  19. Amar Naik says:

I also love the black and white version. Contrast looks great. below is my entry

  20. Gallivanta says:

Love the shadow play in the black and white. And, yes, the music of leaves is wonderful. All year round, it is wonderful.

  21. marialla says:

Very interesting pictures – another of my favourite subjects (trees). Each pictures gives a different feeling – the first one a spotted mysterious place to venture to; the second one a bit ominous and the third one a bit of a slimy feel (as if it were not really real, though when you look you can see they are trees and leaves in autumn). Thank you very much for the feelings and views!! Mari

  22. I also love the contrast of the black and white, but am warmed all over by the third one. Such wonderful texture and color. I can even hear the rustling of the leaves as you walk through it.
    Marvelous! Meghan

  23. The colors in your Orchard photo are wonderful! What a wonderful place to discover. My Monday photo is here: http://nwframeofmind.com/2013/11/04/iphoneography-monday-11-4-13/

  24. The Orchard in Autumn is beautiful Sally-very autumnal!

  25. Its hard to choose between the top two, but for me the black and white just takes it. I like the shadows. Heres my entry: http://uniquesochic.com/2013/11/04/iphoneography-challenge-nature-pond-plants/

  26. My favorite is the last photo! Beautiful fall capture rich with color! Well done! 🙂

  27. Steve says:

I love the Autumn leaves. Here is my contribution this week:

  28. My favorite is the third image. Love the composition and leading lines.

  29. Angeline M says:

All beautiful photos, but I am drawn into that first one. The light at the bottom of the photo on stones…on a path, or is that a stream? It’s beautiful.
Thanks, Sally, and have a great week.

    Weekly Phoneography Challenge: Nature

  30. Indira says:

Can’t pick one. Black and white looks mysterious and the last one so colorful almost like a painting. Marvelous photography.

  31. Oh the green of the first one!

  32. Amy says:

The last photo is like a painting. I think my new phone is ready for this challenge. See you later, Sally.

  33. Sally, I like the way the last photo looks almost Impressionistic. The muted colors are beautiful and the leaves on the trees draw the eye to the mat of leaves on the ground.

    janet

  34. How different autumn looks through each photo!

  35. I think I am going to have to go with the black and white this time…love seeing the contrast. Happy Monday.
