Pens:
“From Above” is the theme for WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge. It had me contemplating rushing to the city, and climbing scores of steps to stand atop and watch the throngs of urbanites parading below.
While interpretations for this challenge are aplenty, I have posted two in the Lens section that are true to the literal interpretation.
The first image was taken at the crossroads between a road and a creek. The bridge hovers above, and daily I am able to ponder its changes: the water reflecting, the flow rearranging, the wildlife appearing, the trees unfolding. I gaze below and much is revealed.
On this day in February the sun mirrored itself as the ripples moved around its glow. As usual the scene gave me a calm moment to meditate and be at one with nature.
The second image is part of an ongoing series of experimentation with the iPhone and its many apps. In the beginning of the week this tulip caught my attention as it stood in the afternoon sun. It’s flowerhead heavy, and yet it’s beauty was evident. I played with PhotoStudio and converted it to black and white.
In each photograph I’ve selected an example from Mother Nature, which is another tribute to her abundance and bounty. Earth Day may be beyond us, but my reverence for nature never waivers.

Which iPhone apps do you use? I have a 4S too and would like to use it more creatively.
Actually, I use the iPhone camera the most. It depends on composition and light. Here is a list: Camera +, Hipstamatic, Snapseed, PhotoStudio, and Lenslight. There are a gazillion apps. It takes using them to find the ones that you like, and are suited to your own style. I’d suggest starting with the first three. There is duplication in these apps, and I try to find ones that do different things. But I do not do extensive editing either with my Nikon DSLR or iPhone.
The first image just had me all curious. Captivating.

I meant to say, thanks, and that’s a place of calm and quiet that I pass daily.
I like them both, too. They feel very different to me so it’s difficult to decide which I like better.

Hi Sally, I like the first photo, it took me a bit to look through your brillant lens and see the sun’s reflection of the sky above. Just a great shot! The second photo is awsome as well, I just have not acquired the taste of photo #2,. Looking forward to check out Photo Studio.

I love the first photo although it took me awhile to work it out ie were you lying down and looking up at the sky, or were you looking down at a reflection from above. Your words confirmed the latter.

I prefer the sky in the woods not only because it is a near perfect image, but because I am a nature lover. The reversed tulip is nice example of “applied geometry.”

I like both photos, but the first one really captures my attention. I am a sucker for silhouettes and mirrored images and this one has both, plus it turns the challenge upside down showing a view from above shot from below — a great take, in my opinion.
The second one is not as strong as the first one for this challenge, but it is a wonderful application of illustrative techniques. I would be happy to be able to draw that picture.
